Booming Japanese individual investor sector
Japanese stock market is booming. After a long-slumping economy for over 10 years, the Japanese economy has finally moved back to a right truck to a steady growth. Accordingly, the stock market has risen again. The Nikkei Stock Index rose more than 40%, from 11,489 Yen to 16,111 in year 2005 alone.

So is individual investor sector. The number of accounts held by the "Big 5" (*) internet securities company has achieved an exponential growth and it surpassed a 3 million mark in February 2006.

This trend resulted in personal wealth. More and more money is put into at-risk asset classes and in year 2005, the proportion of at-risk asset classes jumped to 14.7% from 10.8% in the previous year.

Few Japanese have appropriate financial intelligence
Everything seems to go well at a first glance. Stock performance is good, unemployment rate is low, and many corporations report the highest annual turnover to date.

There is a hitch: Few Japanese have appropriate financial intelligence

An OECD survey said:

"71 per cent of adult respondents have no knowledge about investment in equities and bonds, 57 per cent have no knowledge of financial products in general, and 29 per cent have no knowledge about insurance, pensions, and tax."

Why?

Could this happen in one of the most advanced society in the world?

The reason is simple: A typical Japanese person has virtually no chance to get formal education on money, neither in formal education system, nor in adult education.
